Mt. Annapurna Expedition

Mt. Annapurna I lie in the western part of Nepal. It rises to 8091 m. Annapurna was first climbed by M. Herzog of France in 3 June 1950 via North Face. The Annapurna Himal and the Lamjung Himal stretch from the Kali Gandaki in the west to the Marshyangdi in the east. Four summits make up Annapurna with the entire massif forming a barrier on the northern side of the Pokhara Valley in Nepal. The main summit stands to the west of the Annapurna Sanctuary. It was the first eight thou sanders to be climbed.

Mt. Manaslu Expedition

Manaslu lies in the western part of Nepal. It rises to 8163 m above sea level. It was first climbed by Toshio Imanishi( Japan) on 9 May 1956. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning “intellect” or “soul.  It is the same root word as that for Manasarover, the holy lake near Mt. Kailash in Tibet.

Mt. Dhaulagiri Expedition

Dhaulagiri (8167 m) is the Seventh highest mountain in the world and is located in the Dhaulagiri Himal. Mt. Dhaulagiri lies in the Dhaulagiri Zone of north-central Nepal, northwest of Pokhara.  Its name is derived from Sanskrit “Dhavala" means "White" and Giri is "Mountain".

A French team was permitted to climb either Annapurna or Dhaulagiri in 1950 but decided to climb Annapurna after a reconnaissance of Dhaulagiri. A Swiss team tried to climb Dhaulagiri in 1953 but failed to reach the summit.  .

Mt. Makalu Expedition

Mt. Makalu lies in the eastern part of Nepal and rises to 8463 m above sea level. It is one of the difficult eight-thou sanders, and is considered one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. The mountain is notorious for its steep pitches and knife-edged ridges that are completely open to the element.

Mt. Lhotse Expedition

Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the Himalayas. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest, and the summits of the two mountains are connected by the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000m. Lhotse has one of the smallest topographic prominence values of any official  eight-thousander, as it rises only 610 m above the South Col. Hence it is often seen as a minor eight-thousander.

Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. It rises to 8,586 metres (28,169 feet) above seas level. Mt. Kanchenjunga Main lies in the far eastern part of Nepal. Kangchenjunga translated means “The Five Treasures of Snows”, as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 metres. Three of these five peaks (main, central, and south) are on the border of North Sikkim district of Sikkim, India and Taplejung District of Nepal, while the other two are completely in Taplejung District.

Mt. Everest Expedition

Mt. Everest 8,848 m (29,028 ft) high lies at the border of Nepal and Tibet. It is the tallest mountain in the world. It is also called Sagarmatha in Nepali which means ‘Goddess of the Sky”.The Tibetan calls it Qomolangma which means “Goddess Mother of the World”).It received its official name in 1865 in honor of Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General. Sir Grorge Everest was the first person to record the height and location of Mt. Everest; this is where Mt. Everest got its name.

Nepal is a landlocked nation in South Asia, bordering India to the North India and to the South, East and West. Nepal also borders with People’s Republic of China (Tibet) to the North as well.

For a relatively small country, Nepal has a diverse landscape, ranging from the humid Terai plain lands in the south to the mountainous Himalayas in the north. Eight of the world’s top ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are in Nepal.
