During stay in Kathmandu
Our group received excellent service from the Adventure Extreme staff during our whole stay in Nepal and their support was key to turning our expedition into a pleasant and memorable experience. Guided tours of the historic and religious areas in Kathmandu were extremely interesting. We felt well cared for and had no concerns for personal safety. The large array of historical temples and shrines were often too exotic or complex for an untrained Westerner to fully comprehend. Our group would have like to receive a little more formal (academic) tour and explanation of the religious/cultural sites and what meaning/influence they have on Nepalese life day-to-day life.
About Guide and his experience
Karma Sherpa was a wonderful guide and friend during the trek to Everest Base camp. He has a deep personal knowledge of the culture and geography of the Khumbu Valley region. Several of us would not have been able to complete the trek without his constant encouragement. Both Karma Sherpa and Tenzyn Gurung were very attentive to the personal comfort, well being and safety of our trekking expedition team. With more experience and training, Tenzyn has the making of an excellent guide. About porters and their loyalty Both Pasang Sherpa and Phuri Sherpa were tireless and loyal in supporting our trekking expedition. At the end of each day, they would return on the trail to help tired team members and provide encouragement, always with a big smile.
About Trekking and services
The Everest Base Camp circuit is certainly the ultimate trekking adventure. However, coordinating the logistics and making clients feel reasonably comfortable and safe is key to a successful expedition. This was accomplished as we returned safe and with good memories. Our group encountered significant medical difficulties resulting from intestinal infections but not the more common effects of altitude sickness. The physician on our team (Dr. Renato Poggetti) was able to control the effects with his own medical kit and with support from the clinic in Periche. Without his help, it is conceivable that at least one team member would have required medical evacuation back to Kathmandu. This is simply a calculated risk that trekkers and your company staff must take when venturing in remote regions. However, we recommend that your company review your procedures and training (guides and office staff) should a medical evacuation be necessary in the future. These procedures could simply be a check-list for guides/staff to follow in contacting rescue organizations/officials. Clients should be aware of these procedures and also the cost of extraction if they are implemented.
About Sightseeing In Kathmandu
There is no limit to being exposed to exotic sightseeing experiences. However, on the trail this became an issue to several team members who felt there was little time or energy left at the end of each day to appreciate the scenery or local culture. I believe this can be resolved with a discussion between clients and staff/guides before starting the expedition. We also would have liked an opportunity to meet Sherpa families and learn more about their culture and day-to-day life in the Khumbo Valley.
